Announcing the First Technical Committee Meeting of IBPSA Singapore!

We are excited to announce that IBPSA Singapore recently held its first Technical Committee meeting on October 9, 2024. This get-together marked the beginning of a new initiative to bring together professionals, researchers, and government agencies in the building performance simulation community in Singapore.

As part of the IBPSA Singapore Chapter, the Technical Committee aims to foster a vibrant exchange of ideas and innovations in building simulation. Recognizing the expertise and strong networks of our committee members, the meeting set the stage for future collaboration, with members supporting one another to organize seminars and webinars that will benefit the IBPSA community.

The committee also invited IBPSA Fellow, Prof. Lam Khee Poh to share IBPSA World background and formation. He was recently invited to Building Simulation 2023 Conference as keynote speaker. Through his sharing, we came to know that IBPSA World was formed at about the same time of Total Building Performance & Diagnostic (TBPD) concept was conceived in 1986. See Figure Below.

To all our members and the wider community, stay tuned for updates on upcoming seminars and events led by our newly formed Technical Committee. These initiatives are part of IBPSA Singapore’s ongoing commitment to advancing the field of building performance simulation and fostering professional growth and collaboration across the industry.

Thank you to our Professional Committee members for their dedication and expertise. We look forward to many productive sessions ahead!

Brief Info:

Since the beginning of 2020, our daily life has been severely affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. With evidence suggesting that airborne transmission may play a larger role in the spread of COVID-19 and increasing number of publications pointing to its impacts on building energy efficiencies, a webinar on the topic might be timely.

In this seminar, Dr. KANG Chang Wei from IHPC, A*STAR and Dr. Zuraimi SULTAN from BEARS are cordially invited by IBPSA Singapore to share their recent research activities related to the pandemic. Dr. KANG will first present their R&D efforts in Assessment of Environment Transmission Risk and Future Resilience. After that, Dr. Zuraimi will elucidate Energy impact of building recommendations to reduce risk of COVID-19 transmission in Singapore. Building practitioners, policy makers, ESD consultants, architects and planners, as well as researchers and students who are interested in relevant topics, are all welcomed to participate in this seminar.

Title: Dispersion of Evaporating Cough Droplets in Tropical Environment

Abstract:

During a respiratory event, in this case, a cough, virus laden droplets and aerosols are expelled from an infected person’s mouth. Respiratory droplets/aerosols’ dynamical behaviour shows the competing effects between drag, inertia, gravity and evaporation. The droplet in-flight characteristics and final destination are affected by a range of factors and interdependent interaction between them. It includes complex flow phenomena, from turbulent jets, flow-induced droplets/aerosols dispersion and sedimentation, to droplet evaporation and deposition. Modelling and simulation-based fundamental thermo-fluid physics could provide accurate insight and visualise the droplets/aerosols dynamics and spread process. A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC)’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) framework includes but not limited to expulsion force of fluid volume, droplet/aerosol size distribution, evaporation of water from the droplet (temperature and humidity dependent), and viral load in the droplet. Utilising this computational framework, quantifying droplets falling on human subjects will be assessed. It allows risk-based analysis across different configurations and scenarios. The fundamental knowledge of the underlying physics, together with use cases will be shared in this talk.
